I love when people quibble over the difference between the 1.52% edge on the 6/8 vs 0% edge on pass line odds. In this scenario, it is clear that increasing their odds bet is the more optimal play. I suppose if your goal is to bet a specific number at a specific time, it doesn't really matter if you place 6/8 or put 6/8, but if you wish to gain the point naturally with the understanding you might not get the point of your choosing, it is a better bet to make.Īdditionally, in OPs case, it is understood that they already have a pass line bet and the question was whether to increase their odds behind that bet or to press their place bet. Put bets therefore are indeed sub-optimal plays because the player never gains that advantage stage for themselves, but with the added flexibility of being able to choose the point yourself. A player is at a mathematical advantage to win their bet at this stage of the bet, and at a mathematical disadvantage once a point is set (which is significantly decreased with any amount of odds). You're missing out on the advantage play a pass line bet has before a point is set.
